Position Overview:
The Evening Shift Supervisor is responsible for the safe, efficient and effective execution of manufacturing activities during the evening shift.

The position provides direct on-site supervision and direction to Process Operators and manufacturing staff. The Evening Shift Supervisor is responsible for deploying employees to scheduled work, monitoring execution of the production plan, maintaining safe operating practices, responding to operational issues and ensuring an effective handover to the Production Manager and incoming shift.

The role is primarily focused on shift execution and front-line supervision, rather than overall management of the Production function. Accountability for broader production strategy, department performance, production systems, labour-management processes and longer-term improvement activities remains with the Production Manager.

Safety, HSSE & Compliance

  • Provide visible front-line leadership for safe work practices throughout the evening shift.
  • Ensure work is conducted in accordance with Wakefield policies, procedures, HSSE requirements and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct and support shift safety discussions and reinforce required PPE, safe-work procedures and operating standards.
  • Stop work where an unsafe condition or practice is identified and ensure appropriate escalation.
  • Respond to safety, environmental and operational incidents occurring during the shift and ensure they are promptly reported and escalated.
  • Ensure employees understand and follow applicable permits, procedures and controls before work begins.
Shift Leadership & Production Execution

  • This is a supervisory position with authority to direct the work of employees assigned to the evening shift.
  • Lead and direct Process Operators and manufacturing staff throughout the evening shift.
  • Assign employees to production activities based on operational requirements and employee qualifications/training.
  • Monitor production progress throughout the shift and adjust labour deployment within the shift as required.
  • Ensure scheduled blending, packaging, filling, loading/offloading and related manufacturing activities are executed safely and in accordance with established requirements.
  • Monitor production interruptions, equipment issues, material shortages and other constraints; take appropriate immediate action within established procedures and escalate issues that cannot be resolved at the shift level.
  • Maintain focus on execution of the daily production schedule and service requirements.

Quality & Operational Control
  • Ensure production activities are executed in accordance with established quality requirements and operating procedures.
  • Respond to quality concerns identified during the shift and escalate issues to Quality and Production leadership as required.
  • Ensure non-conforming or potentially non-conforming product is appropriately identified and controlled using established processes.
  • Reinforce good manufacturing practices, housekeeping and process discipline throughout the shift.
  • Work collaboratively with Quality personnel when support or disposition is required.

Systems, Documentation & Shift Handover
  • Ensure required shift production records and operational documentation are completed accurately and on time.
  • Ensure production transactions and work-order activities within the supervisor's assigned responsibilities are completed in accordance with established processes.
  • Review production status and outstanding issues before the end of the shift.
  • Provide a clear handover identifying production completed, work outstanding, downtime, equipment concerns, quality issues, safety concerns and other matters requiring follow-up.
  • Escalate significant issues to the Production Manager or other designated leadership during the shift where necessary.

Direct Managerial / Supervisory Responsibility

The Evening Shift Supervisor is expected to make real-time decisions necessary to safely execute the approved production plan during the evening shift, including:
  • Assigning and reassigning Process Operators and manufacturing staff to work activities.
  • Establishing the sequence and priority of assigned shift activities within the approved production plan.
  • The position executes the approved production plan but does not own production planning, scheduling or longer-term production sequencing.
  • Stopping work where there is a safety, environmental, quality or operational concern.
  • Adjusting labour deployment in response to production conditions.
  • Escalating significant safety, quality, equipment, staffing or production issues.
  • Providing immediate coaching and corrective direction where employee performance or behaviour does not meet expectations.
  • Monitor equipment performance and ensure equipment issues identified during the shift are appropriately reported.
  • Coordinate immediate operational response to equipment breakdowns using established escalation processes.
  • Work with Maintenance personnel to safely support troubleshooting and restoration of production equipment.
  • Adjust shift priorities where equipment availability affects the production plan.
  • Communicate unresolved equipment issues and resulting production impacts during shift handover.
  • Issue operating instructions and expectations;
  • Monitor attendance, conduct and performance;
  • Approve routine breaks and short-duration employee movement within established requirements;
  • Address and document conduct and performance concerns;
  • Recommend formal corrective or disciplinary action;
  • Authorize work stoppage for safety, quality, environmental or equipment concerns; and
  • Escalate grievances, formal discipline and collective-agreement interpretation matters.
Operational Coverage
  • Maintain the training, qualifications and operational knowledge required to perform applicable Process Operator duties.
  • Provide temporary Process Operator coverage during employee absences, breaks, unexpected workload or other operational interruptions when required.
  • Ensure that providing operational coverage does not compromise effective supervision of the shift.
  • Escalate situations where operational coverage would leave the shift without appropriate supervision.
  • Process Operator coverage is a secondary and occasional responsibility; the primary function of the position remains supervision and direction of employees.
Education / Experience
  • College diploma, skilled-trades background or equivalent combination of manufacturing experience and education preferred.
  • Previous experience in a manufacturing, blending, packaging or related production environment.
  • Experience supervising employees in a unionized manufacturing environment is preferred.
  • Previous team-lead or supervisory experience strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience directing employees and coordinating production activities.
  • Experience in liquid blending, packaging or consumer-packaged-goods manufacturing would be an asset.
  • Experience working with ERP/WMS or other manufacturing systems would be an asset.
  • Strong knowledge of workplace safety practices and manufacturing operating procedures.

Working Conditions
  • Regular evening-shift position providing on-site leadership throughout the shift.
  • Combination of manufacturing floor, warehouse and office environments.
  • Regular presence in plant operations, warehouse and truck-yard areas.
  • Required use of applicable PPE.
  • May require additional hours to support operational issues, emergencies or shift handover.

Salary Range $90,000–$100,000
