TRANSPORTATION PLANNER    

We are actively looking for a Transportation Planner to join our Distribution Team team in our our Toronto facility.  

Position Title:  Transportation Planner
Department: Supply Chain – Distribution & Warehouse
Reporting Manager:  Supply Chain Manager, Central Region

Job Summary:

The Supply Chain group is charged with the task of ensuring products are delivered to customers on a timely, cost-effective basis. The Transportation Planner will support Central Region Distribution Operations by performing load building and route planning and other transportation related duties. They will also support National Distribution by managing the freight payment and auditing process nationally. This position reports to the Central Region Supply Chain Manager, with strong supporting relationship to Order Management Manager.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Plan, prepare and execute daily routing using the Transportation Management System - ensuring orders meet deadlines while optimizing delivery routes and truck loads.
  • Make the carrier decision for all prepaid packaged shipments for the Central Region.
  • Perform on-going analysis and reporting to drive continuous improvement of routing decisions for freight movements performed by both the Wakefield fleet and common carriers for the region – drive cost per litre (to deliver) down.
  • Review Tank Monitoring Information for the region to ensure customers are being serviced at optimal efficiency.
  • Create and review plan versus actual reporting to assist the Central Region Supply Chain Manager to manage the drivers’ productivity.
  • Audit freight invoices from all carriers and approving all freight payments.
  • Prepare a monthly freight accrual for finance in order to correctly match our freight expense to the proper period.
  • Provide back up support to Shipping Coordinators.
  • Act as a liaison between Customer Care, Territory Sales Managers, Warehousing and customer base.
  • Adhere to provincial Health and Safety legislation and update / implement procedures accordingly. 
  • Special projects and participation as required.
  • Support the Central Region Supply Chain Manager by being able to perform the following functions when required:
    • Payroll and maintain logs for Wakefield drivers.
    • Tracking of all equipment and maintenance required for drivers and fleet.
    • Ensure the Toronto Fleet meet Ministry of Transportation regulations.

Key Competencies:

  • General knowledge of Supply Chain concepts and applicable provincial legislation.
  • Ability to route plan using appropriate software.
  • Advanced attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Positive interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to proactively manage internal relations. 
  • Ability to anticipate potential problems and proactively resolve situations before they become larger scale issues.
  • Solution-oriented with the ability to easily understand new concepts and the drive to take initiative.

Direct Managerial / Supervisory Responsibility

  • Provide mentoring, coaching, and support to the Central Distribution Drivers.
  • Other support as required.

Education / Experience:

  • Post-Secondary Diploma or Degree in Supply Chain or related Business field.
  • A minimum of 3-5 years Supply Management experience. 
  • Strong Microsoft Suite skills (MS Excel and MS Access experience is a strong asset).
  • Previous experience in a transportation / dispatching capacity would be a strong asset.
  • Experience with a Transportation Management System (TMS) an asset

Working Conditions:

  • Office environment. 
  • All necessary PPE (glasses, hard hats, boots, etc.) while in designated areas.
  • Extended hours during peak times may be required while overseeing operations.
