The Opportunity
The Manufacturing Engineer will provide technical and engineering leadership and support to Manufacturing and Distribution, with specific emphasis on the Plant Maintenance & Operations in the areas of Engineering and Maintenance Systems. In addition, this position will lead and participate in all change management initiatives supporting continuous process improvement, project management, policy & procedure development, equipment reliability, and new opportunity development from an engineering, maintenance and facilities perspective.

What You Will Do:
Health & Safety:
  • Work with HSSE and Maintenance departments to ensure all engineering, maintenance, contractor and other technical functions are executed in compliance with HSSE policies and industrial standards.
  • Anticipate, identify and evaluate hazardous conditions and best practices.
  • Review Machinery Guarding, specifications and compliance requirements for the Plant equipment and machinery.
  • Ensure all contractors are aligned and compliant to HSSE standards and that all capital work is completed in accordance with CSA safety approved standards.
Engineering & Maintenance:
  • Implement Autonomous Maintenance program. The development and continuous improvement of a maintenance reliability program centered on a balance between operator and trades based maintenance tasks.
  • Prepare designs and layouts through use of AutoCAD and/or Solid Works.
  • Plan, direct, and coordinate activities concerned with design, construction, modification, and maintenance of equipment and machinery in the Plant.
  • Establish standards and policies for noise & pollution control, installation, modification, quality control, testing, operating procedure, inspection, and maintenance of equipment according to engineering principles and safety regulations.
  • Develop, implement and maintain a preventative & predictive maintenance program for the operational assets through use of the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Develop, monitor and continuously improve engineering and maintenance key performance indicators to optimize capital (asset and labour).
  • Create processes to ensure adherence of facilities to regulatory and Wakefield standards for Health-Safety-Security-Environment ((HSSE) compliance.
  • Provide support to Maintenance, Production and Quality Managers for the delivery of day to day requirements.
  • Track Hydro & Natural Gas consumption and utilize energy conservation programs for the incentive rebates.
  • Development and upholding of an engineering & maintenance library containing all necessary documentation for:
    • Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)
    • Equipment & machine manuals
    • Drawings and documentation for Plant & Distribution Facilities, Process Instrumentation Diagrams – P&ID, Programmable Logic Controller – PLC programs, Environmental Compliance Approval – ECA, Environmental Activity & Sector Registry – EASR, Utility Services, Electrical Power Distribution, Single Line Diagrams
    • Engineering & Regulatory standards, codes and guidelines (NFPA, CSA, ESA, etc.)
    • Other appropriate information as required
Capital:
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing and Distribution to develop and prioritize annual capital plan.
  • Execute capital projects timely and cost effectively.
  • Where appropriate, projects to be chartered, with sponsorship map, resources roles and responsibilities defined, and communicated on plant notice boards and through weekly team/crew communication meetings.
  • Develop a long range strategic technical plan in conjunction with the operating departments and the operations strategic plan; provide leadership in investigation and development of significant efficiency projects leveraging new technologies; provide support and engineering expertise in investigations and in the development of potential business opportunities reliant on changes to production environment.
  • Conduct the required inspections/audits related to codes and regulatory requirements, and company policies, and ensuring appropriate capital (or maintenance activity) is undertaken to ensure compliance.
  • Management and oversight of the CAPEX approval process.
  • Work with Finance to ensure that:
    • Asset registries for capital upgrades are properly documented and recorded so asset book value can be obtained on all equipment installed
    • Track depreciation schedules plant wide and ensure that, for budgeting processes, proper funding is allocated to depreciation accounts

  • Leadership experience with the ability to mentor, coach and develop others.
  • Positive leadership example including excellent team and communication skills, and the ability to collaborate, impact and influence in areas where no direct authority exists.
  • Ability to translate ideas and concepts to non-technical personnel and develop technical scope and design to meet requirements/needs.
  • Strong orientation to innovate and continuously investigate emerging technologies to potentially leverage within Wakefield operations.
  • Ability to investigate and identify root cause in complex technical issues.
  • Strong project management skills including ability to develop complex, multi-phased project plans and coordinate a variety of resources (including third party contractors) to ensure compliant and cost-effective implementation.
Education/Experience:
  • University degree in Mechanical Engineering with a Professional Engineering (P.Eng) designation or Engineer in Training (E.I.T.) that is working towards P.Eng designation.
  • Minimum 2 - 3 years engineering work experience, including internship
  • Basic understanding of Siemens and Allen Bradley Automation PLC software with the ability to conduct basic troubleshooting for plant equipment & systems
  • Strong experience in reliability and safety engineering.
  • Previous plant-maintenance engineering experience is an asset.
